Issue No. 74-a (August 15, 2005) -- Mark Satin, Editor

Katrina's two-part message

. . . a 100-word editorial

Here is an e-mail we received last year from Ms. Yvonne Hamm of Metairie, Louisiana, just outside New Orleans.  Pay special attention to the P.S.:

You liberal Godless sh--heads are poisoning the minds of the people that are stupid enough to pay attention to the worthless folks that you are.  I feel sorry for you and those like you.  You make me sick!!

P.S.  Please stick your baseless environmental issues and shove them up your a--.  Rush Limbaugh has your kind pegged.

Hopefully even Ms. Hamm would now acknowledge that part of Katrina's message is "liberal": the environment must be a paramount concern.  Global warming is real, and so is the need for environmentally appropriate infrastructure.

The other part of Katrina's message is "conservative," though.  We desperately need to reinvent government at all levels so it's more flexible and imaginative and efficient, even if that means constraining the power of the public employee unions (biggest stumbling block to the federal "reinventing government" initiatives of the 1990s).

Can we broaden ourselves enough to absorb both parts of that message?
